Prof. Dr. Gustavo Zubieta-Calleja stands as one of the world's foremost authorities in high-altitude physiology and medicine. With decades of groundbreaking research and clinical practice, he has fundamentally shaped our understanding of human adaptation to extreme environments and the physiological implications of hypoxic conditions.
His work spans from fundamental research in human adaptation mechanisms to practical applications in clinical medicine and even space exploration. Through his leadership of HAPPI-IPPA and his numerous scientific contributions, Prof. Zubieta-Calleja continues to advance the field of altitude medicine.
A Continuing Family Legacy: Prof. Dr. Gustavo Zubieta-Calleja has continued the pioneering work of his father and lifetime mentor Prof. Dr. Gustavo Zubieta-Castillo, founder of IPPA. His dedication to advancing high-altitude medicine and physiology is carried forward by his daughters, Natalia Zubieta-DeUrioste, MD, who is pursuing her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary, Canada, and serves as his scientific collaborator, and Rafaela Zubieta-DeUrioste, whose unconditional support has been an essential part of this family legacy. Together, they are the designated successors in continuing and expanding this vital work. Some of the original ideas of Gustavo Sr. are also preserved here, reflecting the close scientific partnership in which Gustavo Jr. worked alongside his father throughout his career.
